FIGURES , PHOTOGRAPHS AND TABLES
Submit line figures as PMT's (high quality laser prints are acceptable) sized as you would like for them to be reproduced. Portrait page size figures can be no larger than 5 1/4 by 8 inches (smaller lengths are desirable in order to have enough space to put the caption on the same page). Landscape page size figures should be less than 5 1/4 in order to leave room for the caption. Column figures can be no wider than 2 5/8 inches. Remember that authors commonly oversize figures. Just because a figure can be 5 3/8 inches wide doesn't mean it should be. The key is readability. Experiment with your scalable copy machine. Shading such as dot patterns do not reduce well. It is best to apply patterns after reduction or use a very coarse pattern on the original. Leave out neat lines as they only waste space. Call or email me if you have questions.
NOTE: You may submit figures as rough drafts in anticipation of revisions by the reviewers. You may submit figures as Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files via email. One figure per file.
Figures are acceptable on a disk as a graphic file. Please submit high quality laser print outs of any graphic file submitted on disk. I prefer tif files in IBM format. Save at 600 pixels/inch. Please indicate on your disk the type of file submitted including the name and version of the software used to generate the file. Apple users System 7 and latter: Use Save As command and an IBM formatted disk. If you submit an Apple disk, it will slow down the preparation of your manuscript.
Photographs must be submitted exact size for publication usually no wider than 2 3/8 (single column), 5 1/4 (double column) or 8 inches if it must be printed as landscape. Crop all unnecessary details. The photographs must be sharp and of good contrast. Have a scale on the photograph as I will usually reduce from the size you submit. You may submit a tif file (grayscale, not color) of your photos at 600 pixels/inch along with your photographic print. Photographs will be screened by the printer at 150 dpi.
Submit high quality printouts of your tables. When you design a table, keep the horizontal and vertical white space to a minimum, use Helvetica or Arial type, 7 points. Also include your tables on a disk in the format of your word processor (MS Word, if possible). Apple users: Use System 7 or 8 Save As command and an IBM formatted disk.
